Do not step on the threshold.
Do not open an umbrella inside.
Do not whistle.
Do not swim in the sea.
Míxìn (迷信), commonly translated as "superstition," refers to the inherited beliefs and practices that shape everyday behaviour across East Asia despite lacking scientific basis or a clear, traceable origin. These are the small prohibitions and gestures passed down through generations: a warning against whistling at night, a reluctance to gift shoes or clocks, a habit of avoiding certain words on certain days. Though often dismissed as irrational holdovers from the past, mixin continues to inform decisions, rituals and relationships in the present, operating alongside modern, rational life.
Gathering five East Asian artists–Han Minkyung, Kuo Po-Yun, Aura Sun, Liu Shimeng and Lee Daesung–in the Mix Inn, this exhibition considers how such inherited beliefs continue to shape personal and collective identity today.
The works presented in Mix Inn form simultaneously a dialogue and their own individual narratives of reconciling the emotional and the factual, the personal and the collective, through ritualistic practices. These practices are informed both by the artists’ cultural experiences and by individual encounters with loss, uncertainty and inherited memory. The exhibition traces how mixin persists not as blind belief, but as a lived, adaptive language for navigating what cannot otherwise be explained.
